A Louisiana pollster conducted a nationwide survey that finds that if the Republican Presidential primary was held today, 53% say they would vote former President Donald Trump. Trump beat out nine other candidates listed in the poll of 1,100 Republican voters. John Couvillon of JMC Analytics conducted the poll.
“You do have an absolute majority of voters, who not only approve of the time he was President, but want him back, so that’s the challenge that anybody challenging Donald Trump at this point,” said Couvillon.
Fourteen Republican candidates have announced they are running for the party’s presidential nomination next year. Couvillon says in order for one of these candidates to gain ground on the former president, they need to have a break out moment in one of the debates.
“More specifically what that means, is you have to find a way, to differentiate yourself from former President Donald Trump, part one, part two you have a way to make him look weak,” said Couvillon.
Couvillon says Trump getting indicted on multiple charges in two separate federal cases is not hurting his popularity among Republicans. And He says the large field of Republican presidential hopefuls is helping the former President’s 2024 campaign.
“What that means is, the more challengers there are, the easier it is for him, because it dilutes the anti-Trump vote,” said Couvillon.
Trump will be in Metairie Tuesday for a fundraiser.
