SunGas Renewables is looking at building a $2 billion clean fuel facility in Pineville at the former International Paper Mill site. Louisiana Central President and CEO Jim Clinton said SunGas anticipates the creation of more than a thousand jobs at peak construction.
“About 109 new direct jobs with an average annual salary of more than $78,000 and another 390 new indirect jobs,” said Clinton.
Pineville Mayor Rich Dupree said it’s a huge announcement for Central Louisiana and the City of Pineville for a piece of property he said has been dormant for close to 14 years. He said SunGas Renewables is a $2-billion investment for the area.
“That is going to help bring energy to a different level for us, for this company because the innovation that they’re creating delivers low-carbon marine fuels,” said Dupree.
It will be used by Denmark-based Maersk, the second-largest container shipping company in the world.
Dupree said landing SunGas Renewables is a collaborative effort among several organizations and the existing infrastructure and ports make the location ideal for the green methanol production facility.
“Hopefully is what will allow us to continue to attract more opportunities besides this new manufacturer,” said Dupree.
If the project moves forward, construction is expected to begin next year and the facility would open in 2027.
