The State Fire Marshal is investigating a fatal house and brush fire that resulted in the discovery of a body in Franklinton on Thursday. Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says investigators believe the blaze may have started outside of the home.
“The investigation did find evidence of several burn piles however, at this time deputies are unable to confirm if there were any active at the time the house fire was discovered.
The brush fire around the home located off of H.C. Rushing Road prevented firefighters from accessing the house fire for several hours.
When firefighters were able to access the home, that’s when the body was found inside. Rodrigue reinforced the message that smoke detectors are critical in warning people to get out of a building in time.
“One of the best ways to escape a home fire is to have working smoke alarms to alert you to the danger before it becomes too late to respond to it.”
The victim is believed to be the 72-year-old homeowner who had mobility challenges. Official identification is pending.
