The Department of Children and Family Services unveils its online Child Support Estimator. DCFS Child Support Director Konitra Jack said families can simply enter their income and a few other steps and get an estimated payment. Normally she said attorneys and a judge are involved to set the order…
“But when it comes to families who might need a little more guidance in going through it, they’ll have the opportunity to key in the numbers and get an anticipated result right there,” said Jack.
Jack said the online tool is comparable to a mortgage calculator, the estimator gives parents a ballpark idea of monthly child support payments. And for parents who already have a determined amount, Jack said if there are changes the estimator is useful because it can give you an idea of what the new amount would be.
“And see how those changes and circumstances might affect their child support order. To see if they might be looking at an increase or decrease in the amount,” said Jack.
The estimator was launched about two weeks ago and the DCFS said it’s been thoroughly tested and gives parents a better understanding of what factors are involved in determining payment amounts. Besides the estimator, Jack said their website offers even more insight for parents.
“And when it comes to child support, we’ve got videos, we’ve got other pages, some frequently asked questions, how to do different things. They’re all there on our website,” said Jack.
