Between now and the start of early voting on September 30th, we will profile each of the six main candidates for governor. Today it’s Republican Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt. Hewitt has released a blueprint that she says will unlock Louisiana’s potential and she says it starts by providing children with a great education and then linking education to jobs.
“So that it’s seamless, our students go right into those jobs, and right now there’s a gap. So many of them are leaving to go to other places because we’re not doing a very good job or aligning our educational programming with the workforce needs,” said Hewitt.
Hewitt says if elected governor, she will ensure a computer science curriculum in every K-through-12 grade level and the high school curriculum will require computer coding.
The engineering executive for Shell said she’s the best candidate for the state to remain attractive to the oil and gas industry and not pursue lawsuits against them like opponent Jeff Landry.
“And telling the Department of Natural Resources to basically enforce the coastal permits with the state laws that we already have on the books. The Attorney General has partnered with the trial lawyers and is pushing the industry out of our state,” said Hewitt.
She’s also in favor of diversifying the state’s energy sector. Hewitt said she’s passed legislation to fund hydrogen research…
“We need to work on renewables. Certainly, wind and solar is an opportunity. Carbon capture is an opportunity. And I have passed legislation and worked in all of those areas,” said Hewitt.
Hewitt, who was first elected to the legislature in 2016, has written and passed more than 125 pieces of legislation.
