Heading into election day Saturday, the expectation is that the governor’s race will go to a run-off between Republican Jeff Landry and Democrat Shawn Wilson. If you are looking for a surprise or upset, Lapolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford says Landry winning without a run-off might be your best bet.
“If there was a trend in the last couple of weeks of tracking, is that Jeff Landry is gaining momentum, he’s not losing, he was not maintaining, he was building,” said Alford.
The runoff is scheduled for November 18th.
Alford says once this election cycle is over, we’ll likely see state government move further to the right.
“Super majorities are already guaranteed in the House and Senate, it looks like maybe, possibly every single statewide election will be Republican, we’ll have the most conservative Board of Elementary and Secondary Education that we’ve ever seen in modern history,” said Alford.
Alford says it’s likely the races for attorney general, state treasurer and secretary of state will end up in a run-off. He says there are also plenty of legislative races that will need a run-off.
“Blake Miguez, House majority leader, who is facing a challenger from a local farmer Huge Andre, which has really split the political class in a very public way, it’s been a very dirty race,” said Alford.
There are also three competitive state senate races in northwest Louisiana.
