After an animal hoarding situation of 53 cats was discovered in New Iberia last Saturday, the Humane Society of Louisiana is asking for contributions to cover medical expenses. HSLA Director Jeff Dorson said the cats were living in a home with deplorable conditions.
“So, you walk in, and you need a respirator to even negotiate trying to get from room to room. We’re pulling out cats, they’re all sick, they’re going to a vet that’s expensive. They’re staying for several days to treat their ailments,” said Dorson.
A GoFundMe account “53 Cats Need Our Help” has been set up click here.
Dorson said they are also asking cat rescues and individuals interested in adopting a cat to contact them.
“Most of these are gray and orange Tabbies. So please if this is a time that you’re looking for a cat contact us. We really need to distribute these cats to good homes,” said Dorson.
And with more than 50 cats removed from the home, Dorson said one gave birth to kittens Tuesday night and more are on the way.
“With all these unaltered cats, it’s bound to happen. So, we have five pregnant moms who are going to give birth at different times. So, they have to be in a nice safe clean environment,” said Dorson.
As soon as space is available Iberia Parish Rabies Control said they will remove the approximate remaining 30 felines that have been surrendered from the owner’s home. An investigation is ongoing.
