Unless the Louisiana Supreme Court opts to hear arguments in the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s race case, it looks like there will be another runoff election in March between Democrat Henry Whitehorn and Republican John Nickelson.
“And we expect a lot higher turnout than the 28% we got before. If it’s in March it will be on that presidential primary ballot here in Louisiana. So, we’ll also be bringing in even more party politics than we likely had in this sheriff’s race,” said political analyst Scott Hughes.
Hughes believes their campaigns will differ this go around to motivate voter turnout.
“They’re going to have to raise money again, do media buys. Hit the trail again and this will probably be a whole different campaign. Many in the community think this will be a much more heated campaign, it will be each trying to point out why they are the better sheriff,” said Hughes.
It was a heated race going into the runoff and Hughes expects things will continue to simmer.
“This is certainly going to be a North Louisiana campaign but now a little Tabasco flavors thrown in. I think you’ll have old-time politics but it going to get probably a little spicy between now and March,” said Hughes.
After a one-vote margin, Nickelson challenged the race, and an appellate court upheld a lower court’s ruling to void the November 18th runoff and hold another one. Whitehorn is expected to file a challenge to the state supreme court.
