It’s New Year’s Day and the beginning of 2024 resolutions. While many of us suffer setbacks with them, LSU Health New Orleans Chair of Psychiatry Dr. Rahn Bailey said to choose realistic resolutions, let them be things you can control, and have a support group.
“It speaks to issues regarding what expectations are but also how we can be proactive by doing the kinds of things that we can control that can lead to a more positive future,” said Bailey.
The pandemic and long-term isolation raised awareness about its links to depression. Bailey said having positive support in your life increases your chances of being more likely to keep your resolutions.
“Positive socialization and avoiding isolation, helps to direct you from issues that might undermine one’s own temperament and continence, are very beneficial,” said Bailey.
Bailey recommends joining or participating in group activities that involve hobbies you enjoy. At the same time, you’ll meet people with shared interests.
And when you do find that you’ve failed to keep your resolution, remember you can always start over again, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
“It’s also about knowing where to go when we actually need some assistance, which we all need periodically I think in our lives,” said Bailey.
