The Louisiana Wildlife Federation is looking to honor Youth Hunter of the Year. The award will recognize a boy and girl hunter 15 years of age or younger and the deadline to apply is Wednesday. Jimmy Fredrick with LWF said they want to hear the story of a hunting trip that took place last year from the perspective of the hunter.
“It’s all about the experience, and about the love of the outdoors of Louisiana and about having those special memories that they make with their grandfather, or their father, their uncle or their brother, or whoever it might be,” said Fredrick.
The winner will be presented with a plaque at LWF’s Annual Conservation Achievement Awards banquet on April 12th.
Fredrick said LWF is giving the award in conjunction with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. He said the essay doesn’t necessarily have to be about a successful hunting trip, it’s all about the experience.
“It is really all about making sure that we instill the love of hunting and the outdoors and Louisiana wildlife and all the great natural resources that we have here and to the youth what we have, three years old or 15 years old,” said Fredrick.
Among the prizes is a $100 gift certificate from Bowie Outfitters and a third gift certificate will be raffled off among other entries.
This will be the first time the award has been presented since 2019.
Fredrick said it’s very easy to enter on their website and participants are asked to write about their memorable hunting trip.
“And we really want it from the perspective of why it was so special to that young person and why they think they should be Youth Hunter of the Year,” said Fredrick.
