U-S House Speaker Mike Johnson is adamant he is not resigning despite calls from House Republicans who are not happy with his proposals to provide aid to Israel and Ukraine. The Republican from Bossier Parish said efforts to remove him from office are not helpful.
“It is in my view an absurd notion that someone would bring a vacate motion when we are simply here trying to do our job,” said Johnson.
Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a motion to vacate the speaker and Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie has suggested Johnson should step down. Johnson said an effort to remove him as speaker does not help House Republicans advance their agenda…
“We have to have a united front and we have to have our members work together and we’ll be working today to do that very thing,” said Johnson.
Johnson’s aid package proposal for Ukraine and Israel will require support from Democrats, which upsets some Republicans. House Republicans also do not like that Johnson is not requiring more security at the U-S Mexico border as he pushes separate aid bills for Ukraine and Israel.
Johnson refers to himself as a wartime speaker…
“Former Speaker Newt Gingrich posted a couple of days ago on his social media that this is the hardest challenge that’s faced a speaker probably in the history of the country and at the moment we’re in right now, a single vote margin at a difficult time when the nation is terribly divided,” said Johnson.
The U-S House has 435 representatives and Republicans hold a single-vote majority with 218 seats.
