A former art teacher at Golden Meadow Middle School in Lafourche Parish has been sentenced to 40-years in prison for sexually abusing one of his former students in 2009. Prosecutor Jason Chatagnier says during the trial they presented evidence on how Ralph Cheramie Junior would groom his victims…
“It begain with her giving her specific attention culminating into touching her inappropriately in his classroom.”
Cheramie was convicted on sexual battery, molestation and indecent behavior charges. Chatagnier says the victim initially reported the incident to school administrators, but an internal investigation yielded little action. He says the victim now as an adult came forward again, reporting the incident to law enforcement, which led to a conviction…
“She told the judge and testified how this had impacted her life in so many ways. Her relationships, not only with family but with friends and with her partner.”
Catagnier says Cheramie’s sentences are to be served concurrently…
“Those 40-year sentences reflect that he will serve 40 years. He is in his sixties, and a 40 year sentence for Ralph Cheramie means that he wont be a free person ever again.”
