UPDATE: The Hammond Police Department has issued a statement regarding the death of a father shot by his son while dropping the juvenile off at school last week:
It is with deep sadness that we report the victim in the shooting that occurred this past Tuesday has succumbed to his injuries. The Hammond Police Department extends its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family as they endure this tragic loss.
The juvenile suspect in this case was previously being held on charges of attempted second-degree murder, along with additional charges. In light of the victim’s passing, those charges are expected to be upgraded to second-degree murder.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Once again, our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they navigate through this devastating situation.
The father of a student was shot by his 13-year-old son in front of the Tangipahoa Alternative School in Hammond this morning. Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron says the father was dropping his son off at school, when his son refused to leave the vehicle. Bergeron says the father decided to take his son back home and that’s when he was shot.
“The shooting occurred; he accelerated forward across the street and drove it through the home. Fortunately, there was nobody in that living room,” Bergeron said.
Bergeron says after the father’s vehicle hit a home across the street, the armed 13-year-old started walking to the school, but the school resource officer acted quickly to disarm the teen.
“Our officer, who’s assigned to that school, put himself in danger, disarmed the shooter and was able to take him into custody,” Bergeron explained.
The adult victim is in stable condition at a local hospital. The 13-year-old shooter was taken to a juvenile facility. And Bergeron is calling the school resource officer a hero for preventing more violence.
“We really need to appreciate our school resource officers and the job that they do. Sometimes it becomes a mundane job. But it goes to show that, at any given point, anything can happen for any officer, no matter where you are or what position you may hold,” Bergeron said.
