This week is Love The Boot Week. It actually got underway Saturday and runs through this Sunday. This is the fifth year for the initiative; Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says four years ago, he got the legislature to move Keep Louisiana Beautiful under his office.
“That year, a little over 50 groups cleaned up Louisiana. Last year, a little over 1,400 groups cleaned up Louisiana in all 64 parishes,” Nungesser said.
Nungesser recalls when he went to a Chamber of Commerce announcement years ago when he was in private business, where he expected the president of Nissan to announce that he was going to build a plant in New Orleans East. What he said instead had a profound effect.
“He said, ” I gotta tell ya, we’re going to be building that plant in Jackson, Mississippi. Because if y’all don’t care to keep your community clean, I don’t want my employees living here,” Nungesser noted.
Nungesser mentioned a new law that allows people to anonymously report people who litter, and they’re issued tickets. He says those citations are very effective in preventing repeat occurrences of littering.
“If you get a ticket for littering, or you pick up litter for a day, you’re 80% less likely to litter,” Nungesser explained.
Throughout the week, more than 28,000 volunteers will participate in over 1,200 cleanup and beautification efforts throughout all 64 parishes.
