Governor Landry signed a bill increasing the penalties for marijuana use on college campuses and near schools. While the new law affects all school zones across the state Pollock Representative Gabe Firment says it specifically targets creating a more family-friendly environment at on-campus tailgates on gamedays.
“The intent of this bill is to protect children, create an environment that’s conducive to families enjoying themselves and having a good time,” Firment said.
Those caught smoking marijuana in school zones now face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Firment says smoking marijuana within 2,000 feet of campuses and schools was already illegal in Louisiana.
“It strengthens enforcement; it gives law enforcement the opportunity to make arrests based on visible observance of illegal behavior and it enhances the penalties,” Firment explained.
Opponents of the bill argue the bill does nothing to address alcohol use on campus, especially that done by underage students. Firment’s answer is simple— consuming alcohol in a school zone is not illegal.
“I really don’t think the alcohol conversation is relevant, because we’re not creating any new crimes; we’re just making it easier to enforce,” Firment noted.
