The son of LSU baseball legend Eddy Furniss, Will Furniss, is following in his dad’s footsteps at the College World Series. While he won’t be wearing purple and gold, Will has led Ole Miss to Omaha in his senior season. The first baseman hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to clinch a 5-3 Super Regional win over Auburn. Eddy said that’s just who Will is.
“He’s been clutch all year,” Eddy said. “He’s been clutch his whole life, and of course, it’s a mindset kind of thing when you’re in those situations. You really have to have a belief that you’re gonna get it done.”
Ole Miss is undefeated in the NCAA Tournament, but all five of their wins have been decided by three runs or less. After some bad luck early in the season, Eddy said things have started going the Rebels’ way.
“They started getting those hits,” he said. “They started getting those 50/50 games and winning them, and that made a difference in a team that goes home versus a team that goes to Omaha is that one swing, one pitch, one play game.”
The Rebels’ College World Series run opens against North Carolina, the fourth-ranked national seed, Friday night. While Ole Miss was able to dodge a four-team SEC gauntlet on the other side of the bracket, Eddy said the Tarheels are no slouch
“That team is very, very good,” he said. “The team that wins that first game ends up winning, most of the time, the World Series. They have to win that first one, so that’s gonna be a big game for coach Bianco and Ole Miss.”
The other two teams in the Rebels’ side of the bracket are West Virginia and Troy.
