Republican Senators and President Trump meet behind closed doors Wednesday to discuss the Iran peace deal and the SAVE America Act. The election security bill would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. The President wants Congress to approve this legislation, but Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy says the votes are not there in the Senate.
“The SAVE America Act is important. Right now, there aren’t the votes. I don’t think there’s going to be the votes; and so, therefore, let’s talk about the things that we actually can change. For example, how do we make life more affordable for Americans?” Cassidy asked.
Cassidy says he’s also very interested to hear what President Trump has to say about Iran. Louisiana’s outgoing U.S. Senator has criticized the peace deal, calling it a foreign policy blunder.
“Unfortunately, our allies are weaker, our enemy is stronger, and we’re not sure we see an end in sight of the Iranians being able to hold the world economy at a choke point called the Strait of Hormuz,” Cassidy said.
On Tuesday, Cassidy was one of four GOP Senators to vote for a War Powers Resolution that calls on the Trump administration to withdraw U.S. troops from the war in Iran. The vote passed on a 50-48 vote.
Cassidy says he supported Trump’s initial war objectives to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon, but those objectives were not met.
“Among those objectives were ending Iran’s nuclear capability, keeping them from having ballistic missiles and degrading their conventional warfare capability. Unfortunately, none of those objectives have been achieved,” Cassidy explained.
