Advocacy group Leaders for a Better Louisiana says there are encouraging signs in ending years of out-migration. Better Louisiana CEO Adam Knapp says the most positive sign is that in 2024, the state grew by 24,000 people. Knapp says Louisiana’s population grew for the first time since 2017, because fewer people moved away.
“We always have some amount of population movement into Louisiana, some amount of the population movement out of Louisiana. The question is whether the amount of people moving out is more than the number moving in, right? So that was most interesting,” Knapp explained.
Knapp says their research found 84,000 people left the state in 2024, the lowest number since 2010. Knapp says a deeper dive into the numbers finds that younger families are moving into the state.
“The age of those who are moving in are, net, more than moving out. The two largest segments are adults age 25-34 and kids under 18,” Knapp noted.
Knapp says Louisiana will unfortunately lose residents to Texas, but they’re seeing a trend where people are moving to Louisiana from states where the cost of living is much higher.
“People moving to Louisiana net more from California, New York, New Jersey; and those states, of course, are where we’ve seen a migration outbound because of cost,” Knapp said.
