At the urging of the legislature, the Board of Regents is cracking down on hazing and bullying. The board approved sweeping enhancements to the Uniform Anti-Hazing Policy to align it with the Caleb Wilson Hazing Prevention Act. Higher Education Commissioner Kim Hunter Reed says it especially cracks down on organizations where hazing is taking place.
“It now allows for organizations to be lifetime banned if they are found responsible for a hazing death on a college campus,” Reed said.
Reed says the board also approved changes to its Uniform Policy on Power-Based Violence to crack down on incidents in which modern technology is used to bully others.
“Now if you have sexualized, deepfake AI images, those are now, by law, Power-Based Violence incidents and will be reported as such,” Reed explained.
Reed says under the new policy, schools will now be required to be more transparent in disclosing hazing incidents, so that parents can have a better understanding of the organization that their kids are looking to participate in.
“The public disclosure will require us to now have the hazing incidents by organization, by campus, and the status of those investigations, on a website,” Reed noted.
