There are concerns over SpaceX’s $100 billion rocket launching facility and what it will mean for hunters and fishermen in Vermilion Parish. In an interview with Talk 107-3, Governor Landry expects Louisiana Starbase will enhance Sportsmen’s Paradise as SpaceX has committed to building up the marshes that are home to a lot of wildlife.
“That coast was disappearing; this project is going to help rebuild that coast,” Landry stated.
Landry says the current headquarters of SpaceX are located in Starbase, Texas, near Brownsville, Texas. The aerospace company has teamed up with the city to protect more than 1,000 acres of South Texas coastal habitat.
“You look at Boca Chica, where SpaceX is. It was put in the middle of a wildlife refuge. And you talk to folks in Brownsville; I went down there; it has revitalized that place,” Landry said.
SpaceX in Texas has been accused of violating the Clean Water Act by releasing pollutants in Texas waters. Conservation groups also say the loud noise and rocket vibrations disturb grounds and migratory patterns.
Landry says the Louisiana Starbase could have an economic impact in the billions for the state. He says Cape Canaveral and surrounding Kennedy Space Center is a perfect example.
“Cape Canaveral, to date, spins off about $14 billion annually into the economy of Florida. It has 30,000 direct and indirect jobs tied to it. This spaceport is going to dwarf Cape Canaveral,” Landry noted.
