Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says President Trump’s nominee to head the FDA, Dr. Heidi Overton, should learn about the state’s seafood industry as part of her confirmation process. Nungesser expressed that sentiment in a letter to Senator Bill Cassidy, saying tariffs on shrimp imports is a good start, but it’s only a starting point.
“At 10%, would help level the playing field for the local domestic seafood industry; but it would also make the imported seafood industry a little safer by inspecting more and hopefully, they clean up their act,” Nungesser explained.
Nungesser says in his letter that Overton should visit Louisiana as part of that learning process.
“We want to bring attention to and make sure she commits to come down to Louisiana and understand the importance of domestic seafood, especially Louisiana seafood; and, that she understands the unsafe imports that are coming into this country,” Nungesser noted.
Nungesser says the state’s seafood industry needs strong safeguards to protect not only the people who eat the seafood, but also the people who catch the seafood locally.
“Here’s an opportunity that doesn’t affect any American company at all; and it would make a lot of the seafood coming into this country a lot safer,” Nungesser said.
