LSU senior linebacker Whit Weeks broke his leg during the Tigers’ 35-6 domination of Texas A&M and could miss the rest of the season. It is a major loss for a team that already lost starting defensive back Dashawn Spears to a season-ending injury. Star tight end Trey’Dez Green is also sidelined for significant time. Coach Lane Kiffin says the injuries are piling up.
“For both No. 7s to be gone for an extended amount of time, it’s really challenging. And a lot of people have to step up,” Kiffin said.
Linebacker Davhon Keys will step up as the starter, like he did last season with Weeks out. Kiffin and his staff rebuilt the LSU roster with a massive transfer class, but he still has concerns about its depth with eight games remaining.
“Unfortunately, I said this would be a major challenge; this is not a team built for a lot of top-level injuries, so here we are. So I told the staff, ‘You’ve got to earn your paychecks now the rest of the year, because it ain’t like we’re in Week 11,'” Kiffin said.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt also played through a hamstring injury against the Aggies. Kiffin says the injury actually helped him stay in the pocket and throw the ball better.
“Regardless of whether he had a hamstring or not, he threw the ball really accurate in the game; and really put the ball in really good places that guys could run with it and really made some good throws, which he’s done a lot of this year,” Kiffin noted.
