Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff deputies say a homeowner used a pair of scissors to fight back against an armed robber who got inside his home. Chief Jimmy Travis says the homeowner feared for his life and two small children as one of the assailants was attacking him.
“He was forced to grab a pair of shears to defend himself and his family and it resulted in one of the assailants being critically wounded and died there on the scene,” Travis said.
Twenty-six-year-old Devin Mitchell of Hammond died from his injuries. Travis says Mitchell was one of five people involved in the armed robbery and home invasion. The other four have been arrested. Travis says the homeowner will not be charged.
“Justified homicide and whatever actions you are required to protect yourself and your family from death or great bodily harm,” Travis said.
The four subjects behind bars are facing several charges, including first-degree murder since their actions led to the death of Mitchell. Travis says the couple that owns the home, arrived at their house while the home invasion was in progress. He says the suspects began aggressively attacking and beating the couple.
“I mean they’re going to be very terrified and they’re going to take whatever means are necessary to protect themselves and their children,” Travis said.
The four men arrested are 23-year-old Antwon Lewis Seymore of Poncahtoula, 20-year-old Christopher Austin Jr. of Hammond, 22-year-old Scionta Dasheawn Bells of Ponchatoula and a 16-year-old male juvenile.
