Two men were struck and killed while changing a tire on the shoulder of I-10 westbound in St. James Parish on Thursday afternoon. State Trooper Taylor Scrantz said 33-year-old Jermaine Irvine of St. Francisville’s vehicle veered off the roadway as 33-year-old Daniel Thomas was assisting 50-year-old James Breaux of Donaldsonville with a flat tire.
“For reasons actually still under investigation, actually traveling through the shoulder and struck Mr. Breaux and Mr. Thomas killing them both,” Scrantz said.
Scrantz says Breaux and Thomas were pronounced dead at the scene and toxicology samples have been taken from all three parties.
“Impairments not suspected but if there is any impairment that comes to light after these toxicology samples obviously those charges will be filed as well,” Scrantz said.
As of now, no charges have been filed against Irvine. Scrantz urges motorists to be aware of disabled vehicles on the side of the road.
“You know just being a good fellow motorist if you see someone changing a flat tire and you’re able to do so please move over that way you give them a little bit more room to operate and quickly can change the tire and get back on the roadway,” Scrantz said.
