If you haven’t claimed your Child Tax Credit from the American Rescue Plan that provided up to $3,600 per child for the 2021 tax year, a deadline is approaching. Louisiana Budget Project Executive Director Jan Moeller said the November 15th deadline applies to a quick filing tool at GetCTC.org.
“And it’s a way that people who may not have filed their 2021 tax returns can do so on their phones, it takes 15 minutes,” said Moeller.
Moeller said in response to the pandemic Congress enacted the one-time increase in the Child Tax Credit and it grew from $2,500 per child to $3,000 or $3,600 depending on the child’s age. And what’s also important about the 2021 Child Tax Credit is that it’s fully refundable.
“And what that means is that you can claim the full amount of the credit, even if you had very little or no income in 2021,” said Moeller.
The 2021 tax year CTC is $3,600 for children under the age of six and it is $3,000 for ages six to 17. And while the CTC has been around for some time, Moeller said most years you have to earn a certain amount to claim it, but for 2021…
“That earnings test was eliminated and so a whole bunch of people who aren’t used to getting these benefits are eligible for it this time, but they just need to know, and they need to get online and they need to claim it. It doesn’t take very long,” said Moeller.
He said the process is also rather simple, that website is GetCTC.org.
