Whereas Republicans got hammered across the country Tuesday, Louisiana was one of the very few states where Republicans weathered the storm. Those are the words of Louisiana Republican Party Executive Director Cory Dennis, who says things so far have gone according to plan.
“We’re glad to have Julia Letlow elected; we’re still working hard to make sure that we keep CD5 and flip CD6,” Dennis said.
Letlow’s win, however, was by a much smaller margin than analysts had expected. Whereas everyone had the contest as “safe Republican,” Letlow only beat Democrat Jamie Davis by two points. Dennis says that trend cannot continue.
“Conservative voters got a bit of a wake-up call on Tuesday. I think our voters are going to see that, and if they didn’t vote in the general, I think they’re going to be more motivated to vote now to keep a seat in another,” Dennis noted.
With two House seats still yet to be decided, albeit in districts drawn specifically to favor Republicans, Dennis says the job is not done yet.
“We didn’t take anything for granted in the general, and that’s why we were successful. We’re not taking anything for granted in the runoff, and we’re certainly not going to take anything for granted next year in the gubernatorial cycle,” Dennis explained.
