It’s Republican vs. Democrat in the two U.S. House runoffs in Louisiana. In District 5, Democrat Pat Moore will face Republican Gabe Firment. Moore was the leading vote-getter in the nine-candidate race with just 18% of the vote.
“Whether they were Republicans, Democrats, Independents, No-Party, they wanted to see a change in leadership; someone that was going to represent them and be a voice for them,” Moore said.
Firment was just behind at 17%; and while he’s favored to win the runoff, he says he’s taking nothing for granted.
“I’m going to try t0 cover all 24 parishes and introduce myself to the people that we haven’t met and the communities we haven’t visited,” Firment said.
Overall, Republicans got 63% of the vote, compared to 37% for the Democrats. Firment says in the course of reaching out to voters in the Fifth District, he will especially focus on those who voted for Republicans other than himself.
“Once they find out who I am, what my record is in the legislature, I think that will be a natural fit,” Firment noted.
Moore says Firment bills himself as the most conservative Republican in the state House; and given what happened on Tuesday, that might not be the best-selling point in the long run.
“If he is elected, how is he going to be able to work with leadership of Democrats to change what you all wanted?” Moore asked.
